WED

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY (WED)CELEBRATION

In 1972, the United Nations General Assembly established the World Environment Day on the first day of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. Two years later, in 1974 the first WED was held with the theme “Only One Earth”. Even though Environment Day celebration have been held annually since 1974, in 1987 the idea for rotating the center of these activities through selecting different host countries began.

WED Celebration is celebrated every 5th of June with the aim of creating awareness and doing something positive for the environment. People from all works of life in their different places come together to mark this event with positive action.

This year,  as it was unable to go out and celebrate due to the global pandemic, the aim was to help and protect the poor, sick, and vulnerable from the devastating situation. The host country for the year was Colombia. ‘Time for Nature’ was selected as the theme for the year considering the current situation.[iii]

This year we found out that the level of air pollution tremendously fell and nature coming out of hiding because of the lockdown. This showed us that nature can still flourish if we give a chance.

Life would be much better if we lived in harmony with NATURE!
